About 10 years ago I was speaking to a friend of mine who was complaining about his business and the constant roller coaster ride he felt he was always on. I suggesting that he should look into creating a Handyman service business. He scoffed at me and sneered that it was not that interested in small repairs, that he needed bigger projects and more diversified projects to make a living.

Flash forward and without really trying I have incorporated handyman repairs into the scope of my Mechanical service business. You ask how did you do that? it came form my existing cliental. From homeowners posting on town referral email lists and word of mouth.

It funny but once you have established trust and repour with a client they are always asking what other things do you do. I have a number of clients to date that I have never fixed anything related to there plumbing and mechanical systems in there home.

Projects we have helped homeowners with are gutter repairs. or as I like to call them rain liter drain repairs. Shutter repairs or hanging. Window A/C units moved in and out for the changing seasons. Window A/C supports built and installed. Sump pump drainage installed on the exterior of the house. Dig trench and pipe away to low spot on property. The projects that I have listed are a large part of a homes ability to shed water away from the building and or foundation. I’m sure you know of at least on neighbor that every Spring complains about water issue’s with there home.

The  outside building envelope also comes with it’s own water damage scenario. Siding and roofing systems are hit the hardest by Mother Nature. You can find these types of calls all year round in New England. Any one of a number of storms can introduce one or multiple exterior problems.

Window and door trim comes to mind as well as window and door sealing definitely come in to question when the colder months are approaching. As well as Door and Window replacements.

Let’s not forget the chimney? or if you have a Cricket? flashing around chimneys can diminish over time and even if you have a new roof installed a lot of times lead flashing and or step flashing is not replaced. Do I dear mention ice damns? older home were not roofed with ice and water shield. Replacing the first three to four feet of roofing from the edge of your roof back can eliminate ice damn damage.

Inside wall damage. Over the years many a plumber has had to open up a wall or ceiling and as there are walking out the door they mention over there shoulder that they don’t do wall or ceiling patching.
